| Has Description of Event | We have a police officer and police, but they seem either to be not sufficiently equipped or there is not enough of them, for there was a man named Dan barbarously murdered by the blacks at a place called Jackey's Lagoon. They crept up behind him when he was salting some meat in the camp and split the top of his scull off with a tomahawk, and then opened both his sides and took out his fat; they also split the large toe of one foot. The man had a loaded rifle by his side, but did not see or hear them; but his mate, Luke Russel, coming up shortly after, attempting to parley with them, when the blacks surrounded him and fired the dead man's rifle at him, the ball passing through his outer shirt. The two men were gathering cattle with a Mr. Carolan, for the Leichhardt Company. This makes the fourth actual murder that has taken place in that one spot, besides several attacks and several other murders during the three years that I have been here. | [1] |
