• ‘The blacks on the 22nd instant murdered an employé of Messrs, Notts, at Bauhinia Downs, on the Lower Gilbert. This murder was reported by me on the 26th ultimo, and an escort of two troopers vainly requested to go down and hold a magisterial inquiry, as I feel convinced this man's death was owing, not remotely, to police remissness on a former occasion. This day, the 2nd instant, the Serjeant of Folios reports from the Gilbert River Telegraph Station:—*No person has been near Appleton since murder by blacks," a period of eleven days. This, however, as compared with the records of the past twelve months, is commendable activity, the native detachment having, from the 27th ultimo to the 2nd instant, averaged twelve miles a day. The mining public have long ceased to complain, and when an outrage is committed rely upon personal retaliation. The tents of Chinamen at the Upper Gilbert have been pillaged, and they are too terrified to work known payable ground in that quarter; nothing is surer than that these aliens will be decimated and driven from the plant without a vital change in the occupations of the force.
