Described in QuotedescribedInQuote

  • SPEARING CATTLE.—Another raid was made by the blacks last week, on Messrs. Byrnes' stock, on the Walsh, where about twenty head of cattle were speared. In patrolling the district, a gin and piccaninnies were the only members of the tribe that could be met with. These were brought into Thornborough, where they are cared for, the mother having gone into decent service. The latter divulged, in confidence, to a resident black boy here, that not long since a white man had been killed and eaten in the district, but no one is reported missing except Marshall, who has most likely met his fate by this means. • Thornborough. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) October 27. The blacks speared thirty-five head of cattle on the Walsh River yesterday, the property of Byrne Bros., and they are still killing cattle and some horses.[1]all time · Row 0709 Eid 20725

Described in Third QuotedescribedInThirdQuote

  • There was also a great want of police protection in the district. Lives had been lost, and numbers of cattle and horses had been speared by the blacks. ... Within nine months Mr. Byrne had lost a hundred head.[1]all time · Row 0709 Eid 20725

Has Location DescriptionNo location given, other than it was the Byrnes' cattle[1]
Has Location NotesThe Byrnes brothers owned Buln Boora station on the Walsh (Telegraph 5 July 1890, p6). This is the location of Bullaburrah Creek, on the Walsh River[1]
Has Location TypePastoral Run[1]
Has Nature of EventAttack on stock/property[1]
Has Notes Comments'The deceased gentleman [John Byrnes], who was a squatter, owned Bullu-Burrah Station on the Walsh River.' (Morning Post 5 February 1901, p3) One much later account alleges a reprisal for this and/or other stock killings: "A brother of the late Hon. Thomas Joseph Byrne (one-time Premier of this State) had a station on the Walsh River. At different times his horses were speared, and one of his employees sallied forth and dealt the niggers A LONE HAND. He followed them up a valley, picking them off one by one, until they were forced up against impassable rocks. A small cavern existed near the foot of the cliffs, and the remnant took refuge there. But the rifle did the deadly work outside, and only one boy was found alive. It is said that boy is alive to-day." (Truth 4 March 1917, p12) This may also be a reference to the same reprisal: "On the return journey Sub-Inspector Carr was informed, on arriving at White's Station, on the Walsh, of the raid that had lately been made on the horses and cattle running in the neighbourhood, and at once started in pursuit of the perpetrators. On arriving at the camp where the darkies' had feasted, it was evident that they had been surprised by the private party of whites who had started to drive them from the district, and had left in hot haste, leaving portions of both cattle and horses behind them. Their tracks were then followed for some considerable distance, when finding that they also had taken to the hills, and adopted the same tactics as the deserters, the chase was again given up, and the party returned to town as above stated.— Hodgkinson Miner." (Mackay Mercury and South Kennedy Advertiser, 14 January 1882, p2)[1]
