Has Description of EventhasDescriptionOfEvent

  • The next stations of call were Barryoolah and Durham Downs. The teams had to pull through the flooded Wilson lignum country. There were two sandhills in that flooded country, with water holes at the foot of each. The first one, eight miles from Tenapena, was Little Tooley Wooley, and eight miles further north was Big Tooley Wooley. The sandhills bore the same name as the waterholes, and on the larger were scattered the bleached bones of dozens of aboriginals. It was not a burial ground, but the scene of a massacre committed by the Native Police just one place of many, and in many cases the white officers had not been with them to check the slaughter. Probably a few bullocks were speared by some of the bucks, and it was only natural those wild men should hunt them. This tragedy occurred some where about the early 'seventies. Those far western natives were very friendly with the whites, except in cases where a white man was guilty of breaking the strict native laws, which had a lot to do with certain murders, which were for revenge.[1]all time · Row 0739 Eid 20786
