Has Description of EventhasDescriptionOfEvent

  • 'Two men, who had left Mr. Cameron's head station, Planet Downs, to go to an out station, ten miles off, to bring in some horses, camped for the night beside a large fire. In the middle watch the men were awakened by the blacks shouting and beating sticks, and on making for their horses, found to their dismay that they were surrounded by a host of jumping, yelling, incarnate fiends, and that their horses had disappeared. They, however, boldly dashed at and broke through the cordon, and eventually reached home on foot, having of course abandoned everything in their precipitate flight.' Has Nature of EventAttack on Europeans/others[1]
Has Notes CommentsQueensland State Archives Item ID 846731 60/99 Petition from Daniel Cameron asking for Native Police protection in the Leichhardt district to ensure the safety of his stock. The file also contains a reply from Edric Morisset, the Inspector General of Police, dated January 23, 1860 advising that he cannot guarantee Native Police protection to those who choose to live “far from the present boundary of location ... unless the strength of the Native Police Force is augmented to twice its present number”. [M/film Z4900] Note that there is a fictionalised, but purportedly 'true' story of an attack on Planet Downs by an 'ex-officer' in the World's News (12 January 1907, p10). The officer is not named (other than to indicate his surname started with 'C' and he was stationed at the Spring Creek barracks) and the two troopers mentioned—Hector and Nelson—cannot be placed at the Spring Creek barracks by any other documents. There is no evidence for this event occurring (or the associated event of the death of two shepherds at Purbrook Downs with particularly lurid details) in TROVE or the QSA indices.[1]
