‘The poor blacks this time, to judge from scraps of clothing and small domestic articles in their possession, hailing from Townsville, have again been destroying cattle. Both at Macknade and at Gairloch they were very busy, and killed several head; but, thanks to the energy and immediate attention of the Resident Police Inspector, they were caught red-handed and expostulated with, while the evidences of their guilt were in their possession. We trust they will now leave our beef alone for some time to come. Bullocks at eight pounds ten are rather high fare for our black brethren to indulge in.’ (Brisbane Courier 1 September 1873, p3)
