Has Description of EventhasDescriptionOfEvent
- ‘12. In March 1857 there was another attack, this time launched against O¹Connell¹s residence at Barney Point, Gladstone. Fortunately for O¹Connell, he had three men with him for protection. In a dispatch written several days later, O¹Connell argued that population had not increased the security of Port Curtis, and that the retention of the existing force of Native Police in Gladstone was essential and justified the cost of the force. He described the attack on the residence to strengthen his argument, stating that although spears and boomerangs were repeatedly striking the walls of his dwelling, he and his colleagues were eventually able to ‘disperse¹ the attackers.’ (Golding 1966:219).[1]all time · Row 1262 Eid 38187
