A miner had a narrow escape from a treacherous attack by a blackfellow a few days ago, at the diggings at Blackfellow's Gully, situated between Morinish and Rosewood. The miner, who is himself our informant, states that when starting early in the morning for his claim, about a mile outside the gully, he noticed a blackfellow up a tree, and called out to him, asking him if he were looking for "sugar bag" or wild bees' nest. The darkie made no reply, but remained in the tree apparently on the look out. Almost immediately afterwards another blackfellow sprang up from the grass alongside the miner, and had in his right hand a couple of nullah nullahs and in his left a tomahawk. He spoke to this blackfellow, who was just as reticent as his neighbor in the tree. The miner's suspicion as to the honesty of the blacks intentions was aroused, and his impression was fully confirmed on seeing him walk alongside him for a few paces, and then endeavor to lag behind. The miner kept his eye upon him, and, observing him put his hand behind his back, lifted a driving pick, the only thing he carried, in preparation for an attack. He was barely in time; the blackfellow had rapidly changed the tomahawk from his left to his right hand, and was in the act of bringing it down on the white man's skull when its descent was stopped by the driving pick. The miner, not knowing how many of the blacks might be concealed in the long grass, and being afraid of missing his aim if he struck at the darkie, at the distance to which he jumped on his attempt being frustrated, and further the suddenness of the attack, and knowing the deadly accuracy with which the blacks can throw a tomahawk, he preferred getting the darkie in front of him, to risking the consequence of leaving himself disarmed for a moment. He drove the darkie in front of him in the direction of his claim, which he worked by himself. On the way the blackfellow made off, and the miner blew off at his retreating figure a few threats to bring the native police about him. The threat appeared to have some effect, for in the afternoon of the same day not a blackfellow was to be seen in the neighborhood of the gully. The supposed reason of the outrage is, that some of the diggers in the gully had been sweethearting with the gins, and not having kept their promise with the savages in tobacco and "patter," their vengeance was excited, and they endeavored to wreak it upon the first white man they came across. We suppress the name of the miner at his own request, as he feared that the mention of it would cause unnecessary anxiety on the part of his friends.
