  • 'While returning, at one place in the Cumberland group, Captain Sinclair nearly lost his life by the hands of the blacks. Two natives came up to where he had landed, and after a pantomimic conversation for some time, Captain Sinclair rashly accompanied them away for some distance up a steep scrubby hill, when of a sudden he was almost stupified by a severe blow on the head from a stone. Bleeding profusely, and at a rate on such a place almost incredible, he descended the hill pursued by a shower of stones from the blacks, who only left on the prompt appearance of two of Sinclair's companions.'
