  • The blacks at the township were very treacherous and murderous and one had always to be ready for an emergency. In 1852 my father Robert Bolton, Elijah Smith, Hatt and another man went up the river to near Miva crossing as they had discovered a fine lot of cedar. They took a month's rations with them. They cut a large quantity of timber and rolled the logs into the river, but as their provisions were exhausted they sent my father and Smith home in a boat for a fresh supply of rations. On their way back they had to navigate the little craft under an overhanging arch like bough of a tree, and tied to this was a bit of paper — a danger signal. On reading the note which had been written by one of the party left in the camp the commisariat crew were surprised to read that the niggers had attacked the camp, knocked the sawyers about, rifled all the remaining provisions, and given Bolton and Smith warning to get back to civilisation as quickly as possible and stating that they (the camp party) were footing it in hot haste. So the boat returned and the other party also. Later on a fresh appeared in the river and they secured all their timber.[1]all time · Row 1633 Eid 50758
