| Has Day and Month of Event | January | [1] |
| Has Description of Event | It did not take me long to find out after my arrival here that nearly all the men on the neighbouring stations kept their gin and if the husband went to claim his wife he was met gin in hand and ordered off and if he did not go immediately he received the contents of the gun. I saw that the only course for me to adopt from mu position in the district was to put a stop to the wanton and cowardly outrages. The first case that my attention was called to was early in January last. One of the natives of this town accompanied by the black trackers stationed here waited at my office and informed me that he had been shot in the back with a charge of shot by Robert Large (Cook at Waggaby station). I examined him and found for the unfortunate sufferers sake that it was too true, the whole charge of the gun having passed through his shirt & entered between the shoulders. The Blackfellows statement is as follows, that Robert Large Large [sic] had taken his gin, and that when he went over to the station to bring her back he was met and ordered off. At the same time the gun was presented and fired. (QSA846870 1870 Letter from Reginald Uhr to Colonial Secretary 9 April, Colonial Secretarys Office In letters 70/118) | [1] |
