In the immediate vicinity the tracks of a very large mob of blacks were found travelling across the telegraph line, trailing after them wire I followed these tracks on the 29th and on the 30th got their camp in the Hells Gate Ranges some 20 miles SWest of “Puckley Creek” and in order to prevent a very erroneous opinion regarding “whites” committing this depredation I gave on my return to Cooktown the spears of one aboriginal alone consisting of some thirty (30) points of telegraph wire to the Telegraph Master In this camp I destroyed near forty similar spears, all tipped with 5 or 6 points of wire, and explained through the trackers to the gins that this offence must cease, promising them tomahawks &c if they left the wire alone. They understood me and I do not think it will occur again. Should this be the case in a couple of months I would suggest that authority may be given to me to expend a few pounds and distribute amongst the blacks the articles I have promised which they prize highly and will a guarantee of good faith.
