Has DescriptionhasDescription
- FURTHER complaints reach us of robbery by the blacks in the Cowarral district. On Wednesday, some of the huts in New Zealand Gully were invaded and rifled of rations, clothing, and every other article considered valuable by the sable freebooters. The people are naturally becoming much alarmed, and dread to remain in their houses at night. The blacks are never seen, it appears, except when they are bent on plunder. The truth seems to be that they are encouraged by some whites in the neighbourhood, who buy the clothing and other articles not required by the blacks for their own personal use. One blackfellow, when accused of theft the other day, said that he had not got the goode, that Tommy had sold them to a white man on one of the neighbouring stations. We trust the authorities will lose no time in again stationing police at Cawarral, ere some tragic incident occurs to startle the whole colony. (Rockhampton Bulletin, 10 January 1873, p2) ROCKHAMPTON ... The blacks still continue to be very troublesome, and hardly a day passes over without some story being brought in of camps rifled and of tents gutted. Mr. Hill, of the firm of Hill and Dodgson, of New Zealand Gully, was the last victim I heard of. Every article of clothing belonging to him, including an expensive black dress suit, was carried off. He vows vengeance —but no catchee, no habbee. Perhaps Sub-Inspector Douglas may succeed in rooting out the varments [sic]. (Queenslander, 1 February 1873, p10)[1]all time · Row 2204 Eid 61981
