Has Description of EventhasDescriptionOfEvent
- One of three events that took place cJanuary 1885 "We are informed by Surveyor Fitzgerald that during the time he was at the Russell, his camp was attacked three times by the blacks. This occurred twice during the night, and once by daylight, when a large mob of them advanced upon the survey party with spears, swords, shields, &c. Had they not had firearms to defend themselves with, the whole camp would have been murdered. Surveyor Fitzgerald informs us that he felt it to be dangerous while on the Russell, and every precaution had to be taken to prevent a surprise from these aboriginals, more particularly at the time when Donald McAulay was murdered on the Mulgrave River. A petition has been signed by the settlers of the Russell and Mulgrave rivers praying for police protection." (Morning Bulletin, 5 February 1885, p5).[1]all time · Row 2261 Eid 62409
