| Quotes Description From Letter | Letters to the Editor. The Blacks and the Selector. Sir, —I am living two miles from the camp of the native police of this district; I have some cultivation at a gunshot from the main Cairns-Herberton and Mulgrave road, and close by my house. Yet I repeatedly found that the blacks have been robbing me of the little I could raise. My intention in taking up land was, as I had been growing tobacco elsewhere and had some experience in that line, to start planting this sort of crop in a district which was pointed out to me as the most suitable for the purpose. The very best land I could desire for this cultivation was there, and I hoped, considering the low latitude of this district, the mild and wet weather described to me, and the assurances that the tobacco plant thrived exceedingly well here, to make this crop a success. Since I started I have not been able to gather a single pound of tobacco leaf; and all other planters in this district and on the Russell have failed too. Those few plants which each of us had been able to raise were, not one excepted, taken away by the blacks. I have not left now one single plant for seed: those poor dear brothers had not the slightest regard for my toil and expenses. They wanted a smoke, and they took my tobacco; they were hungry, and took my potatoes and pumpkins; whatever they wanted they took. | [1] |
