Has Description of EventI beg to relate to you the following statement of a cowardly atrocity to which I was an eye witness. On last Thursday, the 23rd instant, at about mid-day, a boat was rowed to the beach at Sandgate from " Umpie Bong," and a white man landed from it to purchase rations for himself and his mates, the crew (all or nearly all blacks) remaining waiting for him in the offing. Whilst he was ashore getting what he required, some of the boat's crew went into the water and were fishing at a short distance from the boat, towards the land. Suddenly a white man and two blacks, armed with carbines or rifles, emerged from the mangroves near the Native Police Camp at Sandgate, and after quietly walking along the sands until within a certain distance of these unsuspicious fishermen, they opened fire upon them, and I should think fired about eight shots each. The poor unarmed fishers took shelter, some on shore and some by going out to seaward of the boat under its shelter, and speedily made off. The armed ruffians also made off back to their camp. The boat's crew were signalled back, and after some difficulty were prevailed on to return for the rations and for the man whom they had brought to fetch them. The native police, having had their clumsy, cowardly sport, did not in any way further interfere. After a time the blacks came ashore and bartered their fish, ex-pressing their surprise at the cowardly attack that had been made upon them. They remained on shore about an hour, and returned to " Umpie Bong." These are the simple facts of the case...[1]
