Has Description of EventhasDescriptionOfEvent
- Knew George Neumanee. Saw him last night about a mile from the Pilot Station. The deceased, Sam Ladrane, George Guite, Jack Putana, Charley Lipa and myself went to Ross Island last night. We went on to the beach and then to the Black’s Camp. Remained there about 1/2 an hour. We asked the blacks for the blackboy “Quatro”. The blacks then came to the deceased and told him that the boy was not there. Tommy Maura it was who said the boy was not there. Tommy then threw a boomerang at the deceased and missed him. A lot of blacks then came, some had spears, some tomahawks, and some had pieces of iron and wooden swords, all of them hit him. I know four of them, Tommy Maura, Mujackale, Jim and “Jata” and the **** of the four I saw strike the deceased. Tommy Maura struck deceased in the side with a nulla nulla, Mujackale I think struck deceased with a tomahawk upwards. Jim struck the deceased with a spear in the back and Jata struck deceased down with something in his hand, I do not know what it was. I was standing behind a tree they could not see me. I think there was about 50 native blacks altogether. When I say the deceased down I went away. Did not se deceased again until this morning. His body was lying in a stable attached to a in [sic] the home on Ross Island and the Doctor there was examining the body. Spearhead produced I saw sticking in the body and taken out by the Doctor. I saw a spear with Jim last night. Cannot say that the spearhead produced is the one which I saw. The deceased has a nulla nulla with him. I do not know if he struck any of the blacks with it. I was about 6 yards from the deceased when the blacks were striking him. [signed] John Wahmune. Taken and sworn before me this 17th February 1880 [signed] Charles Dicken PM[1]all time · Row 1101 Eid 33565
