| Has Description | On Monday Mr. J. Kennedy the teamster, who has had several of his horses speared, called on us and stated that the day previously, Sunday, three more of his horses had been attacked by the blacks and severely wounded; also that Donald Brown another teamster had had several horses speared, and that nine of Wallis’ bullocks were missing, and supposed to have met the same fate. Mr. Kennedy reported the matter to the authorities who told him that they could not interefere that it was Mr. Douglas’s duty, and he would see to it. Kennedy then appealed to the Magistrate for protection, and he was informed that it could not be given but—all outside settlers were in a measure called upon to protect themselves. Application was then made for the loan of some Government arms, but of course this was refused. The camp sergeant at the Escort camp however lent Kennedy a black tracker, and accompanied by him a party of six teamsters was made up, and a complete scour of the country effected. About two miles from the township many large camps of blacks were come across, all of recent occupation but the scoundrels evidently getting scent of what was up, made off through the long grass and dense scrubs; and it was not till near sunset that the small force fell upon the enemy, who was in considerable strength, about five miles from town. A circle was made of the camp by the attacking party, and after but little parley, to use an euphonius [sic] term “the enemy was quietly dispersed." | [1] |
