Has Description of Event'About the end of April, ten blacks with their families appeared at the head station (Chesterton), and appeared desirous of cultivating a friendly acquaintance with the whites. I may observe that the blacks had appeared on the station since the previous October, when about 156, who had shown no hostile disposition further than virtually refusing to depart when desired, were dispersed, at our request, by the native police. The reason that we made this request was that we believed it to be the wisest policy for ourselves, as well as the blacks, that they should be kept out from the stations, as nearly every massacre of the whites that has taken place in Australia has resulted from too close an intimacy with the blacks.' (Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser 16 June 1864, p4). NOTE that Chesterton had only been occupied since April 1863[1]
