| Has Day and Month of Event | 19 October | [1] |
| Has Description of Event | On Tuesday, the 19th of October, at about 10 a.m., Joseph Hay, a well-known resident, was, says the Independent, humping his swag along towards the upper Annan tinfield, and had left the river Annan about three miles in his rear, when he saw a little to the right of the track a dozen blacks camped near a water-hole. One of them, a smart ex-trooper looking fellow, aged about 26 years, ran forward in front of the traveller and demanded swag and tobacco, in fair English, adding by way of threat, "suppose you no gib him then I fight you," at the same time feeling for a nulla nulla, concealed in the back of his shirt. Day threw down his bag and pretended to be looking for a revolver, declaring he would shoot the nigger, on which he signalled the other blacks who advanced. Day then whistled and told the leader that plenty white fellow come, on which he ordered a retreat. On the same day, and not far from the same place, two Chinese were robbed of their swags, and only recovered them after a smart fight with the blacks.
