Has Description of EventDriven out of this, one of them, named Jemmy, made across the bush, and was tracked by one of the black trackers and a constable to a camp near Woodland's; on seeing the police he then made another bolt, when the black tracker fired at him and missed—such is the explanation given by the constable—and shot a little piccaninny, who was not seen until after the affair, right through the body. Be it white or black that fired the fatal shot, it is impossible to believe that any human being intentionally killed the little child; he would be a monster that would do it or that would defend the doing of it. The Government have declared it is warrantable to shoot the blacks under some circumstances, and have placed in the hands of savages weapons for the purpose, and the morality or legality of their doing so we will not now discuss. Of one thing we are sure—nothing would better please the majority of the white police than an order from Government that they should never shoot at blackfellows; it is a foul and disgusting business which they would gladly escape. The police told the gins at the camp the blacks would be chased until the money was given up, and fifteen pounds odd has since been restored. - Ibid.[1]
