Has Description of EventIt seems that Charles Johnson, porter to Mr. Brodnitz, while lying awake on Monday night last in the verandah of his house, had his attention attracted by a slight noise as if a stone had been kicked, and looking up, detected a blackfellow with uplifted tomahawk within a few feet, in the act of creeping stealthily on him; in another moment his brains would have been dashed out, and he owed his life simply to the fact that on this particular occasion he felt unusually wakeful, and therefore alive to any disturbance. The black on seeing his prey rise up, made tracks, which Johnson, barefooted, was unable to follow, and the fellow escaped, no doubt to be more lucky the next time. (Northern Argus, 1 February 1871, p2).[1]
