- ‘A report was received by the police on Monday last of an attack upon a Chinaman that had been made by the blacks on the Mulgrave River. It appears the Chinaman was employed on the Pyramid plantation, and was chopping wood for the mill. While thus employed four blacks crept up stealthily behind him, and, before he was aware, struck him with a waddy. His screams brought some of his countrymen to his rescue. There were at this time about 40 blacks looking on and adjacent in the scrub. These were shortly joined by another mob, and must have numbered nearly 100. They assumed a very defiant attitude, and challenged the Chinamen to fight, who were forced to beat a retreat. Mr. Loridan and a number of his men returned to the scene of attack, but the blacks in the meantime had cleared out of sight. Under such circumstances there is a general feeling of insecurity, and unless protection is afforded to this district the settlers will be compelled, in self-defence, to take the law in their own hands. Another account has been given us by a settler on Freshwater Creek, who states he will be compelled to abandon his homestead unless an example is made of these blacks by punishing them.’ (Morning Bulletin 22 January 1885, p5)[1]all time · Row 0586 Eid 20058
