'We are informed that a short time ago about 200 blackfellows assembled at the new boiling-down establishment of Mr. J. C. White, on the Maryborough River, and appeared to exhibit a very unfriendly aspect. A body of the mounted police endeavoured to disperse them, but could only do so by firing, in which encounter one of them was killed.... The blacks in the neighbourhood of Widgee Widgee are of a rather wild character, and it is stated that the person in charge of the station previous to Mr. White's arrival there had frequently to let them know what firearms were made for.-Ibid.'
