| Has Description of Event | On the night of Wednesday last two boats, with volunteer crew, proceeded to where the dingy was supposed to be, two miles beyond the mouth of the Don. They saw traces of the blacks along the beach, and the impression of the boat's keel. On searching a camp, which was deserted, although fires had been seen there ten minutes previously, they found the grapnel but nothing more belonging to the dingy. It being still dark, one party remained to watch the boats, while the other went to examine the beach. Captain Pym, who was in charge of the boats, heard some one approaching, and immediately gave the challenge to which there was no reply. A second challenge, met with the same result. One of the crew said "They are blacks!" Captain Pym, supposing them to be so, and seeing them rush down the beach, seized a spar and charged, when three pistol shots were fired at him, at a distance of from ten to fifteen feet, but, marvellous to relate, not one of them even grazed the skin of the fortunate harbour-master! After this skirmish, the party made up their minds to return, and they were followed by the natives to Queen's Beach. We are happy to say, that they arrived home in safety, after their fruitless and (to one party at least) perilious expedition. | [1] |
